“Poncho and Lefty”– Mexico Edition (11/01/24)
A lot of these more "edge-of-your-seat" adventures I handle on my own. After the trip, I was reflecting on how this one was different. It is challenging to organize an adventure that fits your tolerances and then flex those expectations in a group environment. You want to live the trip that you envisioned, but you begin to realize that the dynamics of friendship and the benefits it brings are just as important, and worth the effort they require. Guatemala: Antigua
"Run...Run Like the Wind" (03/19/20)
I spent a couple days thinking of the perfect title for this blog. I think this one fits, but you won’t understand it until tomorrow’s installment. If you don’t recognize it, it is from a Christopher Cross song. Continue Reading
Mexico: Cabo San Lucas
"Cabo Wabo" (08/05/19)
Back to the story at hand. about a month out of surgery I was going crazy. I booked a cheap ticket to Mexico and planned on just sitting on the beach for a week in Cabo San Lucas. I booked a boutique hotel near the beach and was off. Since it was the middle of the summer it was pretty quiet. Continue Reading
Mexico: Oaxaca
"The Power and the Glory" (02/05/13)
I was not planning on going anywhere until my trip to Asia the second week of March but I had to burn some miles.I have spoken before about my love/hate relationship with Spirit Airlines, but I had reached maximum frustration. I cancelled my Spirit credit card after learning that they are now charging $100 each way for carry-on bags. It wasn't that big a deal as I have pretty much travelled to all the places they fly in Latin America. Continue Reading
Bahamas: Paradise Island
"Bermuda, Bahama, Come On Pretty Mamma" (01/28/12)
I have started a trend of using song lyrics in my titles, and this one seemed like a no-brainer, which probably means I should be trying harder. It was January, and the Michigan winter had been pretty tame so far. I had scheduled a brief trip to the Bahamas and was actually looking for the snow to pile on so that this trip would be that much more necessary. Continue Reading
Puerto Rico: San Juan
"Because it Was There..." (03/23/11)
Things were starting to thaw out, I had just hit 6 months without a vacation, and saw a cheap flight to Puerto Rico. With that aligned I booked a flight, made the following Itinerary and planned a week trip around the island.. Continue Reading
Nicaragua: Managua
"Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money" (03/05/10)
I borrowed the title from a Warren Zevon song that I thought was appropriate. I was sitting around one day and realized I had to use 30K points on a credit card I was gonna close. I figured it was time for a trip and began searching how far I could get. My requirement was that I could afford to stay cheap for 7 days, which pretty much put me in Latin America. Continue Reading
Mexico: Cancun
"Let's Bungle in the Jungle" (02/24/09)
I had been planning this trip for a few weeks and looking forward to it for a few months. I was going to Cancun for a wedding, but was going to spend every free moment venturing out into the great unknown, meeting the locals, bonding with them and corrupting them with my western culture. I was to land on a Thursday at 8am, rent a car, and take a visit to La Isla Mujeres for the day before checking into hotel near Cancun. Continue Reading
Mexico: Baja
"Down Mexico Way" (04/04/06)
This trip starts in San Diego (I will resist the urge to tell you what Will Farrell thinks that name means in the movie Anchorman). Everyone flew in on a Friday afternoon, checked in the St. James in GasLamp and did a little tour of Old Town. Continue Reading
